Down syndrome, Austism, Cerbal palsy, and HBOT

When my 7 year old son was born, our lives changed forever. He came into this world with multiple diagnoses—Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy affecting the left side of his body. On top of that, he faced gastrointestinal challenges, relied on tube feeding, and struggled with chronic constipation. Caring for him has never been easy, but it’s a journey filled with love, resilience, and—most recently—hope.
Over the years, we’ve explored various therapies and treatments to support his development, but one in particular has stood out: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) at Oxychai. Since he was 2 years old he has completed several blocks of 40 sessions, and each time, we've seen real, measurable progress.
Most recently, we’ve noticed a remarkable improvement in his left side, which was once almost completely unresponsive. Now, during mealtimes, if he doesn’t like something I’m feeding him, he uses his left hand to bat it away—something he never could do before. His arm is stronger and more coordinated.
The changes we’ve seen in his cognitive abilities and communication are just as amazing. He now responds to his name more quickly and clearly. A friend recently visited our home and was shocked when he looked up almost immediately after she called him—something that would have been unimaginable just a short time ago.
His awareness of his needs has also undergone a transformation. When he wants a shower, is hungry, or needs his nappy changed, he now reaches for me and guides me to where he wants to go. He’s making choices for himself—choosing between yogurt flavors or deciding what activities to do at his club by touching his carer’s hand to indicate his preference. He follows instructions, makes decisions, and shows a newfound understanding of the world around him.
Emotionally, he’s become more affectionate—he gives kisses more often and engages with us in a deeper, more connected way. His own “language” of jabbering has increased, too, which I see as a clear sign of growing communication skills.
His overall well-being—from physical strength to emotional expression—has reached a level we once thought was out of reach.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has been a game-changer for my son. It’s given him more control over his body, mind, and environment.
For any parent navigating a similar journey, I can’t recommend HBOT highly enough. The improvements may seem small to some, but to us, they are monumental milestones. I look forward to starting another block of sessions soon and continuing this path of healing and hope.
